CHOICE Review

This volume is another major revision and enlargement of this standard reference work on the indigenous trees of Australia, first published in 1957 and last revised in 1970. This newest edition ``describes and illustrates 223 ... important native trees, selected because of their environmental significance, importance to the timber industry, or because they are conspicuous in the landscape.'' It includes 100 additional species not in the third edition. The taxonomic organization and presentation of the species, genera, and families are clearly laid out in both explanatory notes and the table of contents. For those less familiar with the scientific groupings, access via common plant name, as well as via scientific name, is available through the index. Extensive use of hundreds of black-and-white photographs (one of each tree) plus line drawings, a comprehensive index, pertinent glossary, excellent binding, and good-quality paper enhance the usability of this work. The inclusion of approximately 100 additional species not mentioned in the third edition (which described 51 species not included in the original 1957 volume) makes this newest revision a logical and recommended acquisition for undergraduate and graduate libraries supporting studies or research in botany, horticulture, and forestry, even if the earlier editions are owned.-M.A. Miasek, University of Oregon
